Stability in the Palace: Defections Won’t Shake Emir Sanusi’s Throne, Kano Govt Declares

KANO – The Kano State Government has dismissed rumors that the recent wave of political defections within the state will impact the status or stability of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

In a statement aimed at decoupling traditional institutions from the current political reshuffling, the government insisted that the Emirship remains a sacred entity, insulated from the shifting loyalties of the political class.

The clarification comes as several high-profile politicians and grassroots organizers shifted camps between the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speculation had begun to swirl that these moves might weaken the executive’s support for the Emir, who was reinstated following a high-stakes legislative battle last year.

However, the state administration has been quick to douse the flames of uncertainty, asserting that the stool of the Emir is based on law and heritage, not political headcount.

The administration’s “hands-off” declaration serves three primary purposes:

  1. Preserving Royal Dignity: Preventing the throne from being used as a bargaining chip in party politics.

  2. Public Order: Discouraging supporters of various parties from bringing political protests to the palace gates.

  3. Legal Continuity: Reaffirming that the Kano State Emirates Council Law remains the governing framework for the traditional institution, regardless of who jumps ship.

A spokesperson for the government emphasized that the Governor’s commitment to the traditional institution is rooted in the cultural identity of Kano, rather than electoral calculations.

“The Emir of Kano is a symbol of our history and our values. While politicians are free to move between parties as part of our democratic process, the throne of Muhammadu Sanusi II is not a political office and remains unaffected by these migrations.”
