FG Launches E-Fiscal Platform To Eradicate Tax Evasion – FIRS
The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a new Electronic Fiscal System (EFS) to modernize tax administration and combat tax evasion. The system, which includes an e-invoicing solution known as the Merchant-Buyer System (MBS), is designed to provide the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) with real-time visibility into business transactions.
The rollout of the e-fiscal platform is being done in phases. The first phase, which went live on August 1, 2025, targets large companies with an annual turnover of N5 billion and above. The FIRS has extended the deadline for these companies to fully integrate with the platform to November 1, 2025, to allow for a smoother transition.
Key features and benefits of the new platform include:
- Real-time visibility: The system allows the FIRS to monitor commercial transactions as they happen, ensuring the authenticity, accuracy, and completeness of invoices.
- Enhanced compliance: By standardizing invoice creation and exchange, the platform makes it easier for businesses to comply with tax regulations and reduces opportunities for fraud and tax evasion.
- Improved revenue generation: The system is expected to help the government boost its non-oil revenue by reducing leakages and expanding the tax net.
- Streamlined processes: The e-invoicing solution aims to simplify tax administration for both taxpayers and the FIRS, reducing the need for manual intervention and paper-based processes.
Companies like MTN Nigeria, Huawei Nigeria, and IHS Nigeria have already begun adopting the new system, with MTN being the first to transmit live electronic invoices. The FIRS has also partnered with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to incorporate service providers to assist with the onboarding and integration processes.
