Abia State Government Assures Public of Freedom from Cholera, Monkeypox

UMUAHIA, NIGERIA – The Abia State government has officially declared the state to be free of new outbreaks of major public health diseases, including cholera and monkeypox. The announcement was made by the state’s Commissioner for Health, Okey Kanu, following the weekly Executive Council meeting.

Kanu stated that there have been no new reported cases of diseases of public health concern such as Lassa fever, monkeypox, cholera, yellow fever, and diphtheria during the period under review. This positive development, according to the government, is a testament to the increasingly high level of hygienic practices among residents.

The Commissioner’s statement comes amidst ongoing national and international concerns about the spread of these diseases. While other states have recently recorded cases of cholera, the Abia State government maintains that its proactive public health campaigns and improved sanitation measures have successfully prevented a similar situation.

The government also highlighted its commitment to strengthening the healthcare system through the ongoing recruitment of 771 medical doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and other medical personnel. This initiative is aimed at bolstering the state’s health workforce and ensuring that the healthcare system is well-equipped to manage any potential health threats.

While the declaration provides a sense of relief, the state government has urged residents to maintain a high level of vigilance and continue to practice good hygiene to prevent any future outbreaks.
