Tragic Accidental Discharge Claims Life of Police Inspector in Awka
A pall of sorrow hangs over Awka, Anambra State, following a deeply tragic incident where a police inspector, Okolie Amechi, was fatally shot by his 10-year-old son in what authorities have described as an “accidental discharge.”
The heartbreaking event unfolded on Sunday evening, June 15, 2025, when Inspector Amechi was on duty at a Polaris Bank branch. His three children, including the 10-year-old, had reportedly visited him. According to the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the young boy, unaware that his father’s AK-47 rifle was loaded, allegedly pulled the trigger. The bullet struck Inspector Amechi in the back, claiming his life. Another of his children also sustained a hand injury in the unfortunate incident.
Inspector Amechi was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was tragically pronounced dead. The injured child is currently receiving medical attention and is reported to be in stable condition. The AK-47 rifle involved has been recovered by the police, and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accidental shooting is underway.
