NiMet Predicts Heavy Rainfall in Gombe, Kano, Sokoto and Seven Other Northern States, Warns of Flood Risk

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning of above-normal rainfall in Gombe, Kano, and several other northern states as the country approaches the peak of the rainy season. This forecast, part of the agency’s August weather outlook, highlights a significant risk of flash and riverine flooding in the affected regions.

According to NiMet, the increased rainfall intensity and frequency are expected to occur in the coming days, particularly in the extreme northern parts of the country. The states identified as being at high risk of heavy downpours include:

  • Gombe
  • Kano
  • Sokoto
  • Zamfara
  • Jigawa
  • Katsina
  • Yobe
  • Borno
  • Kebbi
  • Bauchi

The agency’s forecast also points to potential consequences of this weather pattern. Increased soil moisture and rising river levels could significantly heighten the risk of flash and riverine flooding in these areas.

In response to this prediction, NiMet has urged flood-prone and riverine communities to remain on high alert. The agency advises residents to heed local evacuation instructions when issued and to keep essential documents and valuables in waterproof containers. Emergency management agencies have also been called upon to prepare communities for possible evacuation and to implement risk mitigation measures.

The forecast also noted that temperatures in August are expected to remain relatively low, especially during the night and early morning hours, which could affect vulnerable populations. The public is advised to dress warmly and take precautions to prevent seasonal illnesses.
