Reps Speaker Acts: Inaugurates 21-Man Committee to Oversee Rivers Assembly

Amidst the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has taken a significant step by inaugurating a 21-member ad-hoc committee. This committee’s mandate is to oversee the affairs of the Rivers State House of Assembly, which has been at the center of the protracted crisis.
The inauguration ceremony, held in Abuja, saw Speaker Abbas charge the committee members, drawn from across the six geopolitical zones, with a non-partisan duty. He emphasized that their role is to ensure good governance, peace, and prosperity in the oil-rich state following the recent emergency proclamation concerning Rivers State.
The House Leader, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, will chair the committee, with Ali Isah serving as the Deputy Chairman. Other members include prominent representatives from various states. This move by the House of Representatives signifies a direct intervention in the Rivers State’s legislative functions, reflecting the seriousness with which the National Assembly is treating the prevailing situation. The committee’s actions will be closely watched as they navigate the complex political landscape and strive to bring stability to the state.
